Berlin, February 3, 2017: I only vaguely recognize the buildings of the disused water pumping station of Prenzlauer Berg. I am intensely busy trying to hypnotize the intercom after I - having taken a deep breath - pressed the doorbell. A cheerful, "Hello. Come in! ", lets me breathe out again. The door is opened electrically ...

18.1.2017: It’s a sunny winter afternoon. For today’s visit to the studio, I only have to travel a short distance. The artist whom I will introduce today lives and works in my home town of Monchengladbach. This is sculptor and painter, Thomas Virnich. Several of his works are well known to me from the public sphere as well as museum exhibits. The Düsseldorf Academy graduate and Professor of the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts is currently being featured in Lugano. I’ve heard a lot about his unusual work. It is a former school that has been continually undergoing a transformation...

Today we're going to Antwerpen. I’m visiting the Belgian artist Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven in the Borgerhout district. Her retrospective that is currently displayed at the Museum Abteiberg Monchengladbach What would I do in orbit? provides a unique insight into her multimedia oeuvre, consisting of drawings, music, paintings, computer and video art. Impressed by the aesthetics of this show, during my visit today I would like to find what ideas and motivations lie behind her works....

Today we’re staying in Mönchengladbach. I'm being visited by the photo artist Carsten Sander. So I could better understand and relate to his work, I’m posing as a model for his current project series, Pipistrella. It is, so to speak, a self-experimental studio visit. ...

We’re in Rotterdam. I'm here to visit the Dutch artist Jan Adriaans. Since he mainly creates with video art, the space presumably will not tell us a lot about him. The question is: will his stories be enough for us to understand him and his work? It’s an experiment. In addition to video art, he has presented photographic works and installations in many individual and group exhibitions. Currently, Jan Adriaans is mainly focusing on video art. Later we will find out more about his motivation....

Today I am going to Amsterdam. More specifically, a little further than Amsterdam, to the tranquil little town of Koog aan de Zaan. Located directly on the river Zaan is the former Hong-Fabriek [honey factory], which is a place for creative entrepreneurs nowadays. I am going to visit the Dutch artist Jasper de Beijer here....

Today I am off to the Werden district of Essen. Situated in an idyllic green landscape right by the Ruhr, an avenue leads me to the former Krupp Stahl AG waterworks, now the home and studio of the Brus family....

We're heading out to the Wildenburger Land, an obscure former feudal territory east of Siegen, past lush meadows and green forests to Hundscheidt, now a part of the municipality of Friesenhagen. At the end of a narrow road, we enter a large farmyard, marked with a half-overgrown sign saying Academy for Subsistence and Holistic Living. Did we take a wrong turn somewhere? A barn swings open and out steps Johannes Gehrke and his brother Christoph. As I would later find out, it's Christoph who is realising his dream of a largely self-sufficient lifestyle here on the farm....
